I just bought my new Epi Thunderbird. I must say it's a badass. If you play Rock n Roll, Hard Rock or Metal, then it's the bass you're looking for. The sustain is perfect and you'll get at last the fatness, shape and heaviness you've been looking for your sound, but it doesn't mean you won't get definition. The active system must provide an extra-definition it didn't used to have (passive system). If you play rock, this is the bass you must buy. If you play jazz, funk or anything like that, find yourself another bass. The only problem is its size and its weight. I also have a P-bass and the Thunderbird it's much bigger and heavier. You'll have to buy the Epiphone hardshell case because it doesm't fit in any other case.
